Hopefully those hundreds of dogs will be adopted instead of now living their lives in shelters before eventually being euthanized.

Idk I’ve talked to a few Greyhound owners and it never sounds like they were abused at all. One broke a bone or something and couldn’t race so she just had puppies raised them and retired. I think he keeps in touch with the new owners of the puppies to since they're now retired. Anyways never really seemed any different to me than hunting dogs.

My wife has always wanted to adopt one. I saw this and thought "hmm, might have to move those plans up, otherwise finding one might be tough and expensive

I’ve had the pleasure of having five retired racing greys share my life in my 21 year tenure in Florida. They are wonderful friends. Sweet, loving, and graceful. When I first moved here, I was excited about racing. I thought they were like thoroughbred horses, treated well and bred for lineage. What I learned is that it’s a numbers game. Breed a litter, of the seven or so dogs, if two race well, cool. The rest would be killed or adopted out. The breeders don’ t want to pay for a non earner. I’m very happy the sport is ending. When Finny and Big Al pass though, what breed will I turn to?

General Custer used to sleep with his greyhounds.

The owners are not gonna tell you straight up if they abusing dogs, man. Too many stories like these up here have been getting out to the Florida press about how the badly the greyhounds have been being treated by a bloodthirsty industry that lobbied it’s way into lax regulation. The lack of oversight they brought themselves ultimately jeopardized the health of the dogs, or worse. It’s why 2/3rds of us voted to strike down the brutal practice of greyhound racing in our state.

Ya that’s definitely fucked up. The owners I’m talking to are the adoptive ones where we don’t have dog racing.

There’s a fun dachshund race each year in southern Indiana. Something like 50 feet long I think.

Have you any idea what they do to those racing horses? I can’t even mention that stuff around my wife - she’s been into equestrian sports her whole life. It’s abuse, plain and simple, but people like the end result and turn a blind eye to the process behind.

The dogs were being abused and killed. Track owners were literally getting away with murder after lobbying for lax regulation. The only thing stupid about greyhound racing is why we let this bloodthirsty industry go on so long unabated. No longer.

Please do the research. A couple hundred jobs will be lost, it being mainly high school kids at the track. Weigh that against 1000s of volunteers across the US and in Europe getting these dogs to homes when they cease to be a source of income. The math isn’t on your boss’ side. And I walk the talk. I’ve had five retired racing greys, including one that I paid the $1k cost of having his hock repaired when the trainer said, nope put him down. I was volunteering at the track at the time and I sure as hell couldnt afford it. Sold my 75 Vespa to pay for the rehab and I don’t regret it a bit. Ask your boss how much he paid out of pocket to help an injured dog

About five years ago, FL passed a law that said the tracks can operate poker parlors and felt games without the dogs running. The day that became law, about 1,000 dogs across FL were immediately put up for adoption. It was a huge crisis and we got the dogs places, but it was tough and expensive. The breeders and trainers didn’t pay, the volunteers did with time and money .

Now, with voters deciding the gaming rules, there’s no need to even have dog tracks. I predict there will be casinos in FL in five years ( not just on reservations ). The tracks exist only so the gambling can happen on site. These days, The majority of people realize this sport is exploitation of animals

Lastly, because I’m petty: would be cool if you and your boss were kept in a little cage all day, fed raw meat (which causes your teeth to fall out) , and let out to exercise twice a day. I mean, look, I’ve had really small apartments in Philly, but I was allowed out whenever I wanted . Oh, and they tattooed both of your ears. Look, it’s Florida, most of us have tattoos anyway, but by choice.
